How Lens evaluations are counted

One evaluation. One Lens. One PR.

A Lens is the operationalization of a Steering principle as a set of binary yes/no questions. When a PR opens, the CDA maps the diff to affected Architecture Ledger entities and selects the Lenses applicable to those entities.

One Lens evaluation = one Lens evaluated against one PR diff. If five Lenses are applicable to the entities a PR touches, the PR consumes five evaluations.

Evaluations are only consumed for PRs that touch governed entities. A dependency update that doesn't cross any architectural boundary may consume zero evaluations.

What counts as a Lens evaluation?
One Lens evaluation is one Lens applied to one PR diff. A Lens is a binary evaluation criteria derived from your Steering artifacts — for example, "Does this change introduce a direct service-to-database dependency?" Each PR triggers evaluations for the Lenses applicable to the entities the diff touches. A typical PR involves 2–5 Lenses depending on how many architectural concerns are relevant to the change.
How many Lens evaluations does my team actually need?
At Team tier (1,000/month), that covers roughly 200–500 meaningful PRs depending on how many Lenses are defined and how actively different parts of the system are being changed. At Business tier (5,000/month), most organizations with 20–50 engineers and healthy PR velocity will stay within quota comfortably. Overage is billed per evaluation at predictable rates — there are no surprise bills, and you can set an overage budget cap.
What happens when I hit my Lens evaluation limit?
PRs continue to open normally. Lens evaluations that would exceed the limit are queued and processed as overage at the published per-evaluation rate for your tier. You can set a monthly overage cap in billing settings — evaluations stop processing once the cap is reached, and the PR is flagged accordingly. You are never charged for overage you didn't explicitly allow.
What is the difference between a CHI and a PR?
A Change Intention (CHI) is the architectural decision declaration before a line of code is written. It names what is changing in the Architecture Ledger, why, and what the expected scope is. A PR is the code implementation. The CDA checks that the implementation matches the declared and approved scope. CHIs are cheap to create — the CLI can draft one from a single intent statement. The value is the approval record and the scope boundary it establishes.
Can I use rkito for a private repository on the free Starter tier?
Yes. The Starter tier works with private repositories. OSS pricing applies only to public repositories with a recognized open-source licence. The Starter tier is simply the free paid tier — it has no requirement to be open source.
Can I upgrade or downgrade at any time?
Yes. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades take effect at the end of the current billing period. When you downgrade, your data is preserved — you keep all Steering artifacts, Architecture Ledger entries, and CHI records. Member and product limits apply going forward.
Is there a free trial for Team or Business?
Team and Business tiers both offer a 14-day free trial. No credit card required to start the trial. The trial gives you full access to the tier's features including automated Lens evaluations (trial quota applies).
